Lady Gaga "Judas" Music Video

Have I ever told you that I am a Lady Gaga fan? Oh, that often, heh? Well...

Lady Gaga's new video Judas requires mentioning because the costumes she wears in it are many, amazing, and come from various sources of inspiration. Here are my Top 5 favourites.

Number 5: The Wave Dress

In this case, it is hard to see the details, but I liked that it was long and metallic. I also always love water scenes. Hopefully one day, I will know more about it.

Number 4: The Killer Nails

I simply love burgundy and deep green together. I used to paint my nails in this fashion as a teen; maybe the fashion will finally kick in now! Plus I love all the bling on those claws (except maybe for the moss).

The shirt has a somewhat Victorian and romantic feel to it, from what we can see of it, i.e. the cuffs. And is it just me, or is that eye make up inspired by an Oudjat (slightly inverted)?

Number 3: The Doublet

Here we have a lovely embroidered doublet, straight out of The Tudors. I have a velvet doublet that I wear as a jacket; perhaps I will no longer be alone after this.

As for the hairstyle, I have read some comments comparing it to Snookie's , but my first thought was in fact Centauri males (in Babylon 5).

Number 2: Riding Look

Not only do i like red and purple together, but lets be honest: what girl does not love a Tiara? That bejeweled cold crown is gorgeous.

Really, I just thought Miss Gaga looked stunningly beautiful in this scene.

Number 1: The Egyptian Bride

This is my favourite look of all, and we only see it for a few seconds at the end of the video. The wig looks like something Egyptian, the dress is a mixture of Lolita and 80's wedding dress and the shoes seem to be 50's saddle oxford. It almost feels like I have seen this look before in a manga, but can't exactly put my finger on which one. In any case, someone had better market that wig because I want it. In fact, I think I may have found my Halloween costume.

The Lady Gaga "Telephone" Phenomenon

Thursday, Lady GaGa's new music video, Telephone, took the world by storm. Some have said it's the biggest, most important video since Michael Jackson's Thriller. I don't know about that, but it is truly artistic, original, and one big marketing campaign for Virgin Mobile, Diet Coke, Miracle Whip and more (Ah, product placement... did I mention I have a degree in publicity? This is a dream come true for any brand). But more important than the hidden publicity was the large number of outrageous outfits worn throughout the video (and the reason I'm gaga for GaGa!).

Costumes on the Red Carpet: 52nd Grammy® Awards

I am long over due to talk about the dresses seen at last week-end's 52nd Grammy® Awards. This time, I didn't limit myself only to the Red Carpet as there were original pieces to be found throughout the evening.

So without further ado, here are my favourite (or the ones tat just popped out of the lot).

This first dress worn by Dancing with the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba isn't really a costume, but I loved the display of the current Origami trend. Looks good on her too!

Also very trendy are feathers and clothes that are meant to drastically change the silhouette. Rihanna pulls it off beautifully. But It does look like she is entering for the Miss Hoth pageant (for those of you who missed it, that was a reference to Star Wars).

Talk about a girl of the 21st century! Imogen Heap's Twitter Dress apparently has a Wi-Fi connection, flashing lights, her necklace lets her tweet with her fans and her purse has an interactive screen. It sort of reminds me of some of the 1930's prediction for fashion (see Fashion Forward: Futuristic looks from the 1930's).

Also, I have to know where she got her umbrella: it is perfect for Sayuri's Winter Dance costume.

Oh Ciara, Cher wants her clothes back!

I didn't really follow the show (Tout le monde en parle was starting again on that night), but one trend for performers is to arrive in one dress, have a costume to sing in (I can understand that), and then a different dress to accept your award in, I'm guessing because it was after their performances and they were then sweaty (I really don't know why, I'm just trying to guess).

For instance, here we have Beyoncé at the beginning of the evening:

She is wearing a beautiful dress with Art Deco and Tribal tone on tone prints.

Then she changes for her performance (understandable):

At first I thought her dress was made of Pop-tabs, but it is actually layers of chains of different sizes. If this is all metal, it was probably heavy! But I've made up my mind: I'm making a Pop-tab dress and I'll see if I can get someone to wear it at an award show!

Speaking of constant costume changes, guess who also did it? My favourite, Lady GaGa of course!

Finally, I must mention P!nk's performance costume, if only because I am a huge fan of Bob Mackie's work.

Costumes on the Red Carpet: MTV's VMA '09

New category: Costumes on the Red Carpet. I've decided to clean up the tag list (which doesn't mean I'm anywhere near to actually starting the cleaning of said list, I've only made up my mind about it) to make it easier to navigate. As I mentioned in my introduction, Red Carpet dresses can be considered costumes (and I promise I'll make a big fuss about the Oscars). I've been looking at some of the VMA 2009: Full Fashion Recap, and there are some actual costumes in there. Really! (OK, I know MTV's Video Music Awards were last Sunday, and that by now the subjects is so passé, but heck, I tell you about centuries old fashion all the time, you're not going to get on my case for four days, are you?)

On a Red Carpet, you would expect fabulous dresses and spiffy suits, right?

While it is still true for some, not everyone follows the same dress code.

Ah! Costumers have got to love Lady GaGa! (I sure do.) Who else dresses as crazily as she does today? Who else dares to wear costumes all the time? (And I was too shy to wear a Feather Fascinator in public!) I've never seen anyone mix The Phantom of the Opera, A Clockwork Orange, The Birds and The Nightmare Before Christmas themes in the same outfit!

Yep! That girl has nothing to fear from the Paparazzis, there is no way one could ever recognize her if she just walked down the street in jeans and t-shirt, with minimal make-up.

I think I use to have a dress with that floral pattern when I was five or six. That was about the same time we did finger painting in school, but our teacher made us wash our hands before we left.

Sarcasm aside, whether we like Perez Hilton or not (I'm not particularly fond of the guy), you've got to give him credit for originality!

*Gasp* Drama on the Red Carpet - Every girl's nightmare come true: Shakira showed up wearing the same dress! Don't the Fashion advisers consult each other before such events? Didn't anyone at Balmain notice the two orders?

Well, at least they were good sports about it and here was no cat fight. I seriously feel bad for both of them. I like them both, and it truly is something every girl dreads!

Costumes in Fashion: Plush toys make great clothes

Now who has not yet seen Lady GaGa's Kermit the Frog Dress/Shawl/Coat (no one seems to know what it really is). Don't know what I'm talking about? See for yourself:

Some of them look like the eyes are dead! A little freaky. And my sweetheart accused me of wearing a coat made of Teddybear skin a few years back, saying it would traumatise children (you know the style, ultrasuede outer layer with acrylic fur lining). Getting back to the topic, we can thank designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac for that one (the Kermit thing, not my winter coat), as well as the muppet skirt she was sporting a few days before that.

People can say what they want, I still think that dress was awesome. A tad bit strange for a red carpet, true, but heck, we still talk about it! Wasn't that the point? If I had to dance in a modern version of Swan Lake, that's what I would want to wear!
