The Myth of Perfection: A Wearing History challenge / Le mythe de la perfection: un défi de Wearing History

In this day and age of constant selfie and polished Social Media life, it becomes easy for anyone to pretend life is perfect and make it believe to their readers. Reality is usually not so. Lauren of Wearing History has issued the following challenge to bloggers everywhere: do a blog post, gathering images from your blog, Facebook, and Instagram feed and share what was REALLY going on behind the scene or in your life. Challenge accepted.

En ces temps d'égoportraits et de reluisante vie sur les Médias Sociaux, il devient facile pour quiconque de prétendre avoir la vie parfaite et le faire croire à ses lecteurs. La réalité est souvent bien différente. Lauren de Wearing History à lancé le défi suivant à tous les blogueurs: présenter un billet de blog où seront réunies des images du blog, de Facebook, et d'Instagram et raconter ce qui se passait VRAIMENT en arrière plan ou dans notre vie à ce moment. Défi accepté.

I refrained from presenting the two above pictures of my Eowyn Green Gown photo shoot last fall before today because I am bothered that my belt was showing the chain I was trying to hide in every pose.

Je n'ai pas voulu présenter les photos ci-dessus prise lors de ma séance de photo de ma Robe Verte d'Éowyn l'automne passé avant aujourd'hui parce que je n'aime pas que la chaine de ma ceinture soit apparente alors que j'essayais de la camoufler lors de chaque pose.

 

Con*Cept 2004, in November. I had hit an all time low: I was jobless, in a depression (just starting meds), my grandfather had died 2 weeks before and I was leaving town within the week to go help my parents clean up his house... in France. AND, this was not the costume I was planning to wear. I had begun to make Arwen's Angel dress but ran out of the silver lace trim I was using (it remains to be finished to this day).

 

Con*Cept 2004, en novembre. J'avais atteint le fond: j'étais sans emploi, en dépression (je venais à peine de commencer mes médicaments), mon grand-père était mort deux semaines auparavant et je devais quitter la ville dans la semaine pour aller aider mes parents à nettoyer sa maison... en France. ET ce n'est pas du tout le costume que je planifiais porter. J'avais commencé à me faire la robe d'ange d'Arwen, mais j'ai manqué de rubans de dentelle argent (et à ce jour, je ne l'ai toujours pas terminé).

 

Although the Annual Costumer's picnic had been planned for weeks, my Sweetheart had forgotten and happened to need the car to go get a business guest at the airport. I almost didn't make it and was fuming with him. I managed to find a lift for me and the kids (thanks Laurie), but we got there late which is bad when you are organizing the event.

Quoique le pique-nique annuel des costumiers ait été planifié longtemps d'avance, mon chéri l'a oublié et a eu besoin de la voiture pour aller chercher un invité d'affaire à l'aéroport. J'ai failli ne pas pouvoir y aller et j'étais bleue de colère. J'ai heureusement fini par trouver quelqu'un pour nous conduire les enfants et moi (merci Laurie), mais on est arrivé en retard ce qui parait mal quand on organise un évènement.

C'est la meilleure photo que j'ai de ce surcot et j'ai oublié d'enlever mon foutu badge d'employé.

 

I had to leave my son at home with his dad for this event because he had a fever and I felt guilty for enjoying myself while he was sick.

 

I could go on and on, but to be fair, I doubt anyone ever believed my life is perfect.

J'ai dû laisser mon petit garçon à la maison avec son père pour cet évènement car il faisait de la fièvre et je me suis sentie coupable tout le long de m'amuser alors qu'il était malade.

Je pourrais continuer encore longtemps, mais soyons honnête, je doute que quiconque ait cru une seconde que ma vie est parfaite.

Happy New Year and 2014 costuming challenges / Bonne année et quelques défis-costumes de 2014

A belated Happy New Year to all! I do apologize for my long silence. We were somewhat unlucky in health in the last couple of months of 2013; nothing especially bad, just colds and flu one after the other, from before Halloween to now still. But I had to become Nurse Mom when my kids were sick, and then it was my turn to be sick, and all in all it completely sapped my energy so that nothing was done on this blog.

I would love to say that my New Year resolution is to write and update more often, but I know that until the end of April, my focus will be on preparing for Costume Con 32, so that will probably not happen until May (hey, at least I am honest with myself and you, my faithful readers).

In the mean time, to celebrate the new year, let me introduce you (in case you do not know them yet) to three of my favourite costuming challenges. I like group sewing challenges, even though I currently don't have much time for them; I find they are a good way to get motivated to work on projects.

Bonne Année en retard à tous! Je vous demande pardon pour mon long silence. Nous avons été plutôt malchanceux coté santé dans les derniers mois de 2013; rien de particulièrement grave, juste des rhumes et des grippes les uns à la suite des autres, d'avant l'Halloween jusqu'à maintenant, mais comme j'ai dû devenir Docteur Maman quand mes enfants étaient malades, puis c'était mon tour d'être malade, et ainsi de suite, me privant de toute énergie et rien ne fut fait sur ce blog.

J'aimerais vous dire que ma résolution du nouvel an est d'écrire et de donner des nouvelles plus souvent, mais je sais que jusqu'à la fin avril, je me concentrerai sur mes costumes pour Costume Con 32, alors ça n'arrivera probablement pas avant mai (au moins je suis honnête avec moi-même et vous, mes chers lecteurs).

En attendant, pour célébrer le nouvel an, laissez-moi vous présenter (au cas où vous ne les connaîtriez pas encore) trois de mes défis-costumes favoris. J'aime bien les groupes de défis de couture, même si je n'ai guère de temps à leur accorder en ce moment; je trouve qu'ils sont une bonne façon de se motiver à travailler sur des projets.

 

The Historical Sew Fortnightly 2014

Inspired by The Sew Weekly, a sewing challenge that offers a theme per week and aims to finish a garment project every 7 days, The Historical Sew Fortnighly began last year and holds bi-monthly challenges for historical costumers (here, historical means WWII and before). One of the goals of the Historical Sew Fortnighly is to encourage participants to produce more historically researched and accurate pieces; submissions are also expected to be newly produced for the challenges. Still, those challenges are quite inspiring if I had the time I once did, I would do the full marathon.

Inspiré du défi-couture hebdomadaire The Sew Weekly (Couture Hebdomadaire) qui offre un thème chaque semaine et vise à terminer un nouveau morceau de vêtement tous les 7 jours, le Historical Sew Fortnighly (Couture Historique de la Quinzaine) fut lancé l'an dernier et tient des défis bi-mensuels pour les costumiers historiques (on parle ici de la 2e guerre mondiale et avant). L'un des buts du Historical Sew Fortnighly est d'encourager les participants à produire des pièces plus historiquement recherchées et exactes; les projets soumis doivent aussi avoir été produit pour le défi. N'empêche que ces défis sont très inspirants. ah, si seulement j'avais le temps libre que j'avais jadis, je ferais le marathon en entier.

Shear Madness Quarterly Challenges

It began as a Facebook group for crazy, original, over the top costumers and in evolved into the Shear Madness Quarterly Challenges. Challenge #1 is over, but there is still plenty of time to join in the fun as the next challenge ends in April. The challenges are open to any costumer with an imagination and some creativity, and you can submit any project you have finished within the last 6 months. Now go forth and create something fabulous!

Ça commença par un groupe Facebook pour costumier fous, originaux et extravagants, et c'est devenu le Shear Madness Quarterly Challenges (Défis Trimestriels Tout Simplement Cinglés). Le premier défi est terminé, mais il reste encore amplement de temps pour participer au second défi qui se terminera en avril. Les défis sont ouverts à tous costumiers avec de l'imagination et un peu de créativité, et vous pouvez soumettre n'importe quel projet terminé dans les six derniers mois. Maintenant allez, et créez quelque chose d'époustouflant.

The Fourth Annual Italian Renaissance Costuming Challenge

For the more historically inclined (especially great if you are in the SCA), The Fourth Annual Italian Renaissance Costuming Challenge is a four month long challenge to create a complete late Italian Renaissance outfit (1480 - 1600). It will run from June 1st to September 30th, but you have to register in May. Still, this gives anyone interested a chance to think about it. Last year's finalists can be found here, if you need a little inspiration.

Pour ceux qui préfère les costumes historiques (et particulièrement bien pour ceux qui jouent dans la SCA), le Fourth Annual Italian Renaissance Costuming Challenge (Le 4e défi annuel de costume de Renaissance Italienne) est un défi de quatre mois pour créer un ensemble complet d'époque Renaissance Italienne (1480 - 1600). Il se tiendra du 1er juin au 30 septembre, mais vous devez vous inscrire en mai. N'empêche, ça laisse la chance à quiconque serait intéressé d'y penser sérieusement. Les finalistes de l'an dernier se trouvent ici, si vous avez besoin d'inspiration.
